The
land Down Under is the one place on Earth most people want to visit
next, according to the annual [2006] Lonely Planet
Travelers' Pulse Survey of
20,000 respondents from 167 countries. Rounding out the top five are
Chile, Brazil, New Zealand, and India.
In the same poll a year ago, Thailand was the favorite
destination for a future vacation, followed by Italy and Australia.
This
year, Australia also topped the list of favorite destinations that
travelers had previously visited, followed by Italy, Thailand, New
Zealand, and France.
Favorite World Regions:
Europe: 28 percent
Asia: 24 percent
South/Central America: 16 percent
Australia and the Pacific: 15 percent
Other fun facts to know and tell:
94
percent of respondents said travel is very or extremely important to
them.
Even
though half of the respondents had already visited 11 or more
countries, fully 48 percent said they still wanted to pursue further
travel experiences.
40
percent said they wanted to give something back to the communities they
visited, including volunteer work and working with local communities.
65 percent said that independent travel had a major impact on
their respect for other cultures.
44 percent said travel strongly impacted the development of
their personal values and ethics.
