Responding to Bad Language

To many of us the language that comes from many of today's youth is offensive, sick, or worse. But what can anyone do about it? It seems so out of controle that many of us may conclude nothing can be done. But when enough people come to the conclusion that enough is enough, there are ways that can begin to cause young people to think twice about the words they let flow from their mouth. Here's one example.

Beware! Say F-Word, This Could Happen

Teens, this is fair warning. If you're going to swear, especially using the F-word, be sure you don't say it around grown-ups. Jamal Wooten, 16, of Portage, Ind., has learned this lesson the hard way.

He said the F-word at school and was suspended for five days for using foul language. This was his second suspension this year from Portage High School; if he gets a third, he could be expelled. The suspension is the least of his worries. The big trouble started when he came Watch your wordshome and his mama and aunt took over. The two women used that time off due to the suspension to the fullest. On Wednesday, Jamal was forced to stand on a street corner for four hours--two in the morning starting at 7 a.m. and two in the afternoon--holding a sign around his neck that read: "I got suspended for using foul language. Look at me now. Don't be like me." His aunt, Julia Santana, told AP, "It wasn't so much to embarrass him but to teach him."

And that wasn't all. On Monday his mother made him do a series of military-style sit-ups and push-ups for two hours, and on Tuesday, he spent the day studying the Bible.

So did he learn his lesson? "I'll definitely watch my mouth," Jamal told AP. "There won't be a third time," he said, referring to the two suspensions he's already had this year. He told his hometown newspaper, the Northwest Indiana Times that "making a fool out of myself" was a fitting penance. "I hate to say I agree with it, but I do," he said.

Now the above example may not be the best way to respond to every situation. But it does prove that something can be done about it. If you've come up with an effective way to respond, why not share it with others? If it seems like it could be helpful to others, we'll post it here.
