Dr. Robert E. Fisher

Dear David,

Yes, I knew Dr. Robert Fisher.  He was overseer here [in Hawaii] in the early 70's and has been a dedicated leader for our denomination for over 35 years.  It is with regret that I report to you that He has passed away this year.  The following article should be of interest to you.

Dr. Fisher served the Church of God in numerous leadership capacities. He was the former superintendent of West Coast Bible College and was the state overseer for Hawaii, Delmarva-DC, North Georgia and Western North Carolina. He was the General Director of Education from 1976-1984. In 1989, he was elected to the Church of God Executive Committee where he served 7 years as General Secretary-Treasurer and Assistant General Overseer. From 1996-2000, he was the Director of Ministerial Care for the denomination. In 2000, Dr. Fisher founded and has been executive director of the Center for Spiritual Renewal in Cleveland, Tennessee. An important part of this ministry is the leading and directing of the Centennial Celebration for the Azusa Street Revival which will take place in Los Angeles April 25-29, 2006.

Dear Don and Patti,

Thank you for your newsletter received a few days ago. It is heartwarming to read of how involved you are in the Gulf Coast ministry. It  is hard to comprehend the devastation until it is seen first hand. Our son, Cameron, went down & helped for several days after Katrina hit & was so moved by what he saw.

In case you haven't heard by now, it is with deep regret that we tell you about the passing of our beloved Bob. It was on August 28 when he began feeling ill. On September 9 he was diagnosed with acute leukemia and just 19 days later on September 28, he was taken. The doctor said the disease had been working in his body for several months. Looking back, I can see some of the signs, but we never dreamed something so serious was going on.

As you might know, five years ago he started a new ministry, Center for Spiritual Renewal. Many wonderful things have happened during this time. His latest project is the Azusa Street Centennial which is scheduled for the last week of April, 2006. This meeting, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the 1906 Azusa Street revival in Los Angeles, was birthed in his heart and he was happily and vigorously pursuing making it happen. It still will happen, and we think will be quite an event to the glory of God. (You can read about it on the web at azusastreet100.net. Other information about his ministry is at spiritualrenewal.net.)

We are still wondering about the timing of his death, considering his vision for the future, but our ways are not always God's ways. His motto was "My Life for God's Glory", and we are believing that there will also be glory in his passing.

I will be praying for you and your ministry.

Blessings!

Mary

Dear Mary,

Thank you for your kind and informative email. Patti and I are so sorry about Bob's passing, yet rejoice in his heavenly graduation. Please be assured of our love and prayers for you and the family, as well as the ongoing ministry of the Center for Spiritual Renewal.

I went onto both websites and found them very interesting. Bob had told me about CSR, and I had also heard of the Azusa Street Centennial. The Lord willing, I am planning on attending. I'll be in Pakistan with a team in March involved in conferences and crusades in various parts of the nation, so I should be able to attend the Azusa events for late April.

We are very grateful for all that Bob and you have meant to our lives and ministry over the years. The facility on the Fort St. Mall in Honolulu was a beacon of light to thousands of troubled youth and adults -- both through your counseling and educational services, and our Teen Challenge administrative & outreach ministries. Bob was also a great blessing as a member of our TC Board of Directors.

Thank you, too, for your occasional ministry support for Patti and I. As the Lord leads and gives us strength, we plan to continue with international training and evangelism through YWAM and others we network with. So many yet need the Lord and to be discipled.

Lovingly in Christ,
