EUROPE
WILL BE PART OF THE ARAB WORLD
Scholar of Islam and Near East Predicts Major Demographic
Change
By Wolfgang Polzer
BERLIN (ANS) -- Near
the end of this century Europe is likely to become part of the Western
Arab world, according to one of the leading scholars of Islam and the
Near East. Prof. Bernhard Lewis, who used to teach at Princeton,
regards migration and demographics as major contributors to this
development.
In an interview with the German newspaper Die Welt Lewis pointed to
several factors, such as
the strong and growing presence of Turks in
Germany,
Arabs in France and
Pakistanis in the United Kingdom.
Native Europeans tended to marry late and have few children while
immigrants from these countries marry at an early age and have many
children.
Lewis predicts that the European population will have Muslim majorities
by the end of the 21st century.
